Industrial application fields of capacitive level switches

2026-02-24

Capacitive level switches are instruments that detect the level of substances based on the principle of capacitance change. The core working principle is to use a metal probe as one electrode of the capacitor, and the container wall (or reference electrode) as the other electrode. When the level of the measured medium changes, due to the different dielectric constants of the medium (such as air, water, oil, particles, etc.), the capacitance between the probe and the container wall changes. When the change in capacitance exceeds the preset threshold, the switch will act and output a switch quantity signal, thereby achieving fixed-point alarm and control of the liquid level (or material level).

1 Petrochemical and Coal Chemical Industries

In the field of chemical engineering, the production process often involves high temperatures, high pressures, and complex medium characteristics, which impose strict requirements on the reliability of instruments. Capacitive level switches, due to their sturdy structure and wide adaptability, have become the ideal choice in this field.

Liquid level measurement under extreme conditions:

In applications such as propane storage tanks, the medium (such as liquid propane) has the characteristics of low density and easy vaporization. Traditional differential pressure level gauges are prone to measurement errors due to the vaporization of the medium in the pressure guiding tube. Level instruments using radio frequency capacitance technology can effectively avoid such problems. Since their measuring tubes are effectively connected to the interior of the storage tank, the liquid phase and gas phase can exchange normally, thereby eliminating the influence of changes in medium density and phase changes on the measurement, ensuring the accuracy and stability of the measurement.

Corrosive media and explosion-proof requirements:

Chemical production often involves strong acids, strong bases, and organic solvents. The probe of the capacitive level switch can be made of corrosion-resistant materials such as PTFE, PEEK, or undergo coating treatment, and the process connection parts can also be made of high-grade materials such as 316L stainless steel or C22 alloy to resist medium erosion. For dangerous areas with flammable and explosive gases, the instrument can be equipped with explosion-proof or intrinsically safe certifications to ensure production safety.

Solid particles and powder levels:

In the production of plastics, fertilizers, additives, etc., it is necessary to monitor the solid particles and powders (such as PE particles, PVC powder, cement, lime) in reaction vessels or silos. Rod-type capacitive level switches can reliably detect these non-conductive or weakly conductive materials and have a material-freezing design to avoid false alarms caused by the accumulation of materials on the probe.

2 Food and Beverage Industry and Pharmaceutical Industry

The food and beverage industry, as well as the pharmaceutical industry, have extremely high requirements for the hygiene level of the production process. Equipment must be easy to clean and must not contaminate the products. Capacitive level switches, with their hygienic design and intelligent functions, are widely used in these industries.

Hygienic Design and Cleanliness Standards:

For the food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries, many capacitive level switches have been specially designed with hygienic structures that comply with standards such as FDA, EG 1935/2004, etc. The sensors typically use stainless steel housings and food-grade materials like PEEK, with smooth surfaces without dead corners, making them easy to clean.

Adaptation to CIP/SIP Cleaning Processes:

The production lines in these industries need to undergo on-site cleaning (CIP) and steam sterilization (SIP) regularly. Capacitive level switches can withstand high-temperature cleaning media up to 135°C to 150°C and process pressures up to 100 bar, and will not give false alarms during the cleaning process.

Adaptability to Thick Media and Multiple Media:

When measuring thick media such as milk, juice, beer, honey, and cream, ordinary level switches are prone to false actions due to media adhesion (fouling). Modern capacitive level switches have a super anti-fouling function. Their unique circuit design can effectively distinguish between actual liquid level changes and media adhesion on the probe, ensuring the accuracy of the detection. At the same time, through intelligent communication protocols like IO-Link, operators can quickly switch preset parameters between various media such as drinking water, oil products, and cleaning solutions, significantly simplifying the debugging process.

3 Semiconductors and Electronic Manufacturing

In the field of precise electronic manufacturing, compact space and reliable detection are the core requirements. The miniaturization of capacitive level switches and their non-contact detection capabilities play a crucial role in such applications.

Level monitoring of the ink cylinder in dispensing machines:

In surface mount technology (SMT) production lines, dispensing machines are used to precisely apply solder paste or adhesives. To prevent product defects and equipment downtime caused by the depletion of the ink, liquid level monitoring of the ink cylinder is required in a very small installation space.

4 Rail Transit and Ship Transportation

Transportation vehicles have specific requirements for the seismic resistance, reliability, and environmental adaptability of equipment. Capacitive level switches are also applied in these mobile scenarios.

Rail vehicle liquid level monitoring:

In the rail transportation field, precise liquid level monitoring is required for water tanks for daily use, sewage tanks, and possibly lubricating oil or cooling fluid tanks on trains.

Ships and Offshore Platforms:

In ship and offshore applications, capacitive level switches are used to monitor fuel tanks, freshwater tanks, ballast water tanks, and cargo tanks (such as asphalt ships). These devices usually need to be certified by classification societies (such as ABS, DNV, CCS, etc.) to verify their long-term reliability in salt spray, vibration, and tilting environments.

5 Water Treatment and Environmental Engineering

In the municipal and industrial wastewater treatment processes, liquid level measurement is the foundation for ensuring process continuity and equipment safety.

Pump station and water tank liquid level control:

In situations such as sewage collection tanks, clean water tanks, and circulating water tanks, capacitive liquid level switches are often used to achieve automatic start-stop control of pumps. When the liquid level reaches the high limit, the drainage pump is started; when it reaches the low limit, the water pump is stopped to prevent the pump from running empty and getting damaged.

Waste hazardous materials and chemical storage tanks:

In industrial wastewater treatment, storage tanks for strong acids, strong bases, or other hazardous chemicals require reliable liquid level monitoring. Capacitive liquid level switches can be installed in hazardous waste buffer tanks to provide high and low liquid level alarms, ensuring the safety of the treatment process.
